Reviewer's opinion: Prompted by the renaissance in historic urban parks in the United Kingdom (largely initiated by the Heritage Lottery Fund Urban Parks programme), this book offers a timely overview of urban park design and discusses many issues common to park regeneration.

It comprises contributions ranging from the historical and social context of parks; advice on preparing restoration management plans; contemporary uses of parks, from play and sport provision to the use of ironwork and water features; shrub planting and bedding practices; and park buildings and monuments.

It should be noted that the subject matter is largely confined to historic urban parks and does not acknowledge public parks without heritage status.

These are also enjoying a revival and are playing a key part in urban economic regeneration - thanks to other funding regimes such as the Single Regeneration Budget and the European Regional Development Fund.

The book is written largely from a British perspective, but does discuss principles from other countries that could be adopted.

It contains useful technical and historical background information which can assist in informing design decisions such as the use of materials and methodologies: ironwork, path construction and planting design.

A comprehensive bibliography provides ample further reference.

The varied subject matter is an indication of the richness of urban park landscapes and, while aspects are omitted (e.g. the role of local communities and the partnership approach to sustainable regeneration), the book is the first to address the new enthusiasm for urban parks.

While it does not pertain to be a 'manual' for regeneration, it does provide general principles which can be adapted for each individual park.

In this context it is an important reference document for many professions involved in public parks and especially for anyone involved in preparing new bids to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
