Green Peabody

Peabody, one of London’s largest social landlords, has teamed up with four landscape architect practices to create or improve open spaces across the capital.
Cracknell, Farrer Huxley Associates, Land Use Consultants and Sprunt have been appointed to create projects ranging from resurfacing of pavements through to development of new play and recreation areas. Sustainable planting and subsequent maintenance are central to the plans.
The regeneration programme is expected to run for 10 years, with some £46 million due to be invested in the improvements. Up to 42 Peabody housing estates will benefit from the programme and works on the ground are due to commence in January 2010.
Peabody project manager Sue Forsyth said: “We’re delighted to welcome Cracknell, Farrer Huxley Associates, Land Use Consultants and Sprunt on board and look forward to working with them alongside our residents. Our aim is to provide open spaces that are greener, better for people and that inspire pride and a sense of ownership among residents."
Peabody has a reputation as a proactive housing association and is coming to the end of a five-year plan that has seen £100million spent on housing improvements. Additionally, lifestyle courses and professional training are part of the Peabody offering – around 750 residents gain qualifications every year.
