A global view of the suburbs

A new report by BURA’s Steering and Development Forum (SDF) has examined the challenges and opportunities facing suburban areas in order for them to provide communities suitable for 21st Century living.
The research, 'Suburban Regeneration: The real challenges', highlights the current condition of suburban areas and the challenges they face in attracting investment and residents.

It also examines the competitive relationship between the suburbs, the rejuvenation of city centres and the attraction of living in outlying rural areas.

BURA drew upon its pool of postgraduate research associates from around the globe to look at suburbs in four continents: South America (Argentina); North America (Canada and the United States); Australasia (Australia); and Europe (France, Germany, Italy and Sweden).
Drawing on case studies, the report looks at the different types of suburbs from around the world and evaluates current academic and professional thought regarding the challenges facing suburban areas.

It is hoped the research will offer a framework for thinking about how suburbs might fit in to the wider urban picture.
